Import from Drafting

Updated v2.4.4

At a glance

  • Pick sketches from your component tree and bring them into Design as editable shapes
  • Sketch layers arrive as prefixed Design layers — Base - Cut — so nothing collides
  • Construction geometry comes across on its own layer; hidden layers arrive hidden
  • Reference images travel with the sketch, at the size and place you put them
  • Everything keeps its true position, so sketches drawn to line up still line up

Design and Drafting now go both ways. Drafting sketches could already pull artwork from Design; Import From Drafting, in the Design browser's Import / Export section, brings a sketch the other way.

Picking sketches

The picker shows your component tree with every sketch that has geometry in it. Tick the ones you want and import — it's the same picker the cutting workspaces use, so it already works the way you expect. You can take several at once, from anywhere in the tree.

What comes across

Lines, arcs, circles, polylines and curves all import as ordinary Design shapes — fully editable, with no link back to the sketch. Curves and arcs are converted to fine polylines on the way in, the same as any imported file, so everything follows Design's line-only contract.

Construction geometry comes across too, parked on a layer of its own called Construction. Design has no separate notion of construction lines, so keeping them on their own layer means they're there as guides when you want them and one click away when you don't.

Reference images placed in the sketch arrive as Design canvases, at the same size and position.

Standalone points and dimensions don't import — Design has no equivalent for either. If a sketch holds any, you'll be told how many were skipped rather than left to wonder why the count doesn't add up.

Layers

A sketch layer arrives prefixed with its sketch name, so Cut from a sketch called Base becomes the Design layer Base - Cut. Nothing lands in a heap, and nothing collides with the layers you already had — import the same sketch twice and the second arrives as Base 2 - Cut. A layer you'd hidden in Drafting arrives hidden in Design.

Position

Geometry lands exactly where it was drawn. That means two sketches drawn around their own origins will arrive on top of each other — each one comes in as its own group, so a single drag pulls them apart, and anything you drew to line up across sketches still lines up. Nothing is shuffled or auto-arranged behind your back.

Sending a design out

The same section carries Send To…, which pushes the whole visible design into Plasma, Laser, Router or Oxyfuel with a quantity, and can switch you there as it goes.
